A Russian restaurant in London, run by Russians, happily serving real Russian food and drink - Potemkin has garnered glowing praise since opening in 2000. Beneath a minimalist ground-floor bar, serving over 130 vodkas and award-winning cocktails, lies the composed sexiness of a curved basement restaurant - very attractive in its simplicity, its padded dark blue and red seating, and gilt-framed nooks guarding Khokhloma vases. If you'd rather not start with (genuine) caviar, try zakusi – Russian mezze of types - accompanied by vodka shots. Mains such as beef stroganoff, and richly flavoured lamb casserole with potatoes, garlic and coriander are all excellent. What's really got the critics salivating, however, is the Siberian pelmeni - home-made dumplings filled with spiced minced pork and beef, served with thick soured cream.
