A village pub this may well be, tucked into leafy Barnsley, but with a head chef like Graham Grafton who has brought his big city nous, earned at starry eateries like the Greenhouse, Bibendum and The Ivy, the cooking is miles above pub fare. Using the freshest ingredients and keeping the menu (which changes daily) very simple, Grafton has created dishes like starter of pea pod soup with shaved foie gras, and home made organic corned beef with piccalilli. Then there are mains like seared turbot with beurre rouge and chives, or organic pork chop with semolina gnocchi, onion marmalade and sage. Vegetarian dishes are cooked to order. The place is charming inside and out, and the ambience is that of a relaxed and thriving country pub, chock full of happy locals and visitors.
