The first Coconut Lagoon Restaurant opened in Kenilworth in November 1998 and within 18 months it was amongst the Good Curry Guide's Top 100 restaurants in the UK. By 2003 Coconut Lagoon restaurants had risen the award ranks to be one of the Top Five Indian restaurants in the country. The latest addition to the vibrant group recently opened in Birmingham's Bennetts Hill, bringing with it the varied cuisines of Kerala, Goa, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh under one roof. Vegetarian delicacies include masalla thosai, a rice and split pea pancake filled with a potato, cabbage, peas and carrot. Meat-eaters meanwhile might like shakoothi, Goan style chicken roasted with mild chilli, tamarind, mustard seeds and fenugreek in a thick sauce, served with mango rice and aviyal. But before you tuck in, we recommend a Malabar Punch cocktail of port and fresh pomegranate with a hint of brandy and orange.
