Restaurants in Smithfield
For some fans - including at least one restaurant reviewer we know - Club Gascon is the ne plus ultra of French cooking in the capital. So first of all, it's not a club, it's a proper restaurant. Secondly, it doesn't specialise in the starter-main-pud-coffee-cigar parade of courses that we usually expect. Instead, the dishes are served as in a Lebanese or Chinese restaurant - you order loads of tapas-sized dishes and share. Thirdly, this is a French restaurant that specialises in the rich, sunsoaked cuisine of southwestern France, the home of the smoked eel and cassoulet and foie gras. In fact, there are at least eight ways that the noble foie gras is presented, everything from soup to grilled to, well, their invention is endless. The decor is light, modern and airy without being scarily minimalist. The service is confidently superb. The wines are an excellent match for the vibrant flavours of the cuisine. In all, this is a dining experience to savour. Then take a nap.
