Recommended by Egon Ronay and with two AA rosettes, Howards is a Georgian restaurant on the harbour in Hotwells, just 15 minutes' walk from the centre of Bristol. The feel is coolly sophisticated, the dishes classic with a very French feel. Start with smoked venison and duck terrine studded with pistachio nuts and served with a fruity orange and apricot chutney, then try the fillet of salmon baked in filo pastry with ginger, pinenuts and sultanas. The equally accomplished desserts might include apple and raisin brûlée and mulled-wine poached pears. It's also a great place for a traditional Sunday lunch. The wine list is French-dominated and features several organic varieties.
