Reviews of Birchfield Guesthouse, York

Best rates for a Local Hotel

This guest house has 5 star reviews on travel websites but the actual place is a huge disappointment - there is no sign saying it is a guest house, the door is kept 'on the latch' and there is NO reception. The only member of staff we saw was the prop and there is no real service given. The prop gave me a sheet asking guests to give 5 star reviews and in return would be welcomed back with 'best rooms at lowest rates'. We were given a tiny attic room with a very low ceiling and no storage space, a shower that didn't work properly and 1 thin towel each. We had been promised a move to a bigger room after the first night but was told on arrival that wouldn't happen. The breakfast is completely inadequate as you have to make your own with only the cheapest, poorest quality and most limited tea, coffee, bread, margarine and jam available: more like a hostel with its plastic tablecloths! This place is no cheaper than far better guest houses in the area and feels like the prop wants to spend as little money on it as possible - NOT recommended.

I originally booked to stay 3 nights here with my 14 year old son, spending 1 night in a small room and then moving to a larger room. This 2nd room never materialised and we were consigned to a small attic room where my son kept banging his head on the low ceiling so we left after the 1st night. This establishment has no sign saying it is a Guest house and no reception and the breakfast is help yourself to a limited variety of cereals and make your own toast. All fair enough EXCEPT the prop gives guests a sheet asking them to give maximum scores on the internet and they will be welcomed back with 'the best rooms at the lowest rates'. This offering of incentives means that all the good reviews given for this place have no credibility whatsoever. His claims that the place is 'boutiquey' and the breakfast is 'continental' are, in my opinion, quite delusional! His prices are the same as other better Guest houses in the same area. I do not recommend Birchfields.Furthermore when I wrote a similar review on Trip Advisor he sent me an email threatening to take payment for the rest of the original booking despite the fact he had reneged on his promise which is why we left; and also threatening legal action over my revelations about the incentives he offers for good reviews despite the fact I have in my possession the information sheet from him on which he writes this! Unprofessional and dishonest!
