The Hotel is well situated and the rooms are well appointed. We stayed in an executive room which was not exactly executive in standard. It was dusty on arrival and remained that way despite making the staff aware of this fact. We had a room over-looking the street and not the more desiarble view of the cathederal. As a result we had put up with noise from Next store deliveries and Dustbin lorries. We enjoyed our stay in Winchester, despite the hotel rather than becuase of it.

dear readers I visited the wessex hotel for my christmas works dinner, it was the only venue available at short notice, now I know why. The food was appauling - sprouts were raw! stuffing uncooked. In addition to our stressful evening my dear colleague lost her broach whilst dancing. When she rang the hotel, she was given various inconsistent information by the hotel staff - without being able to speak to the general manager as of yet. This quite frankly is totally unacceptable for a reputable establishment such as the wessex. I sincerely hope that you will think twice visiting this hotel.

The hotel service is very good, breakfast is great. But the hotel needs renovating. The bedrooms, although clean and well furnished could do with a coat of paint and the bathrooms are very are old and shabby - on top of that the shower heads are so full of lime, that hardly any water comes out, and it is virtually impossible to wash your hair.

I had specially booked a double and twin room close together through their central booking number(we were travelling with two ladies in their 80's). When we arrived I found that the rooms were on separate floors and at opposite ends of the hotel. Because they were full I was offered one alternate twin room which was of lesser quality and would have involved walking up and down several stairs. I was also told by reception I should have booked directly. How exactly I could do that from Canada I am not sure, as only their central booking telephone number was available. The furnishings in the restaurant were thread bare, literally. We had dinner in the restaurant the first evening - the service was so slow we could have gone for a walk and returned and no one would have noticed. Breakfast the next morning took things to a whole new level. The wait staff had not set up sufficient tables for four, so we waited 30 minutes to sit down. Morning #3 I had to tell the waitress to put two tables for two together, she was quite prepared for us to sit side by side at seperate tables. During our stay only one of our party of four ever had their eggs cooked as requested and then only once, every day the service was was abysmal. However, I will say that the room service food was very good. Our suite had a comfortable bed, however, the pull-out bed in the sitting room had cushions so thin and worn that you felt the supports through them. The lifts again were interesting, one had a notice that only three people at a time should use it despite being rated for four. Both lifts were due I would think for a complete service as they shuddered and complained during each trip. Not a good experience.
