Stayrd at The Lodge on a recent trip to Durham. Good quality rooms.Staff were warm and welcoming and had a good local knowledge of where to go in the area. Food in the restaurant was good and a reasonable selection. Chef did as much as possible to provide food for special diet at request. There is a lovely outdoor sun terrace out the rear of the restaurant with lovely views down the valley. All in all a local hotel that deserves its 4 star rating and one I will be definatley be staying at again.

A strange place this. The decor is first class but it doesn't live up to the hype on its website. There is no great selection of beers, a couple of lagers and an ice-cold John Smiths. You have to order your breakfast the night before, which is totally wierd, and the "uncooked" breakfast conisted of two slices of toast. The rooms are noisy, being next to the main road. I got charged a different price for my beer. lower price by the barman, and fifty-five pence more by the owner. £3.25 for a stomach chilling beer is disgraceful. On the upside the evening menu is quite good nd the pizza is extremely good.

Room was good, apart from bed not made on 2nd day and no renewal of coffee etc. Pub and restaurant was unwelcoming. Areas boarded off were the best sitting areas of the pub with the view. This not only looked awful- like a building site, but why not use these areas for breakfasts instead of the pokey little corner we had to sit in? Went down the road for a meal instead of to the restaurant because of the cold atmosphere. Didn't deserve its 4 star rating.
