We visited The Swan for a two-night stay in October, for what I hoped would be a romantic stay for my birthday. Having researched the alternatives, we were attracted by the High Street location, convenience of parking and special offer for dinner bed and breakfast. Whilst the staff could not have been more helpful, and the bed comfortable, we did have to ask for the heating to be turned on. The decor was extremely tired - echoes of what other reviewers have written about peeling paint and mould in the bathroom. It was not a case of a major refurb required but a few tins of paint and some Dettol mould and mildew remover. This smacked of not caring. The room was extremely noisy (We were above the gents toilets. Need I say more?) Our evening meal was good (as was the quality of the beer and the wine)and again, service was excellent, although food was of the burger and chips and fish and chips variety rather than the type that the website had suggested on their sample menus. The breakfasts were extremely disappointing, given that they had received a Kellog's award in 2009. On the first day we laughed about the fact that there were two radios on playing different music in the restaurant. On the second day it was an annoyance. The toast arrived burnt, my poached eggs were hard, and my partner's scrambled eggs had long since turned to rubber. As my partner said, 'It is acceptable to burn toast, it is not acceptable to serve it.' You can't serve the stuff, ask 'would you like any sauce with that?' and hope it will do. During breakfast on the second morning, the cleaner started mopping the floor with lemon bleach. Need I say: UNACCEPTABLE? I am not really sure what market The Swan is aiming at. The website suggests quality and hotels of character, but this was not the experience. The price was what you would expect to pay for B & B in England, but this wasn't up to scratch. It would be impossible to recommend The Swan.

Good Points: Nice and clean. Friendly staff. Has been updated recently. Very quiet. Bad Points: Room was quite warm even with the windows open. TV had to be tuned in before we could use it. No bath. General review: Relaxing and enjoyable. In a lovely village.
