Having never visited the North East of England before and having a few days spare, my wife and I decided to take a short break in South Shields. The location seemed perfect as a base for visiting sites of interest and also for relaxing in the evening, the town being blessed with a multitude of pubs and restaurants. Having used the internet to search for accomodation, we were fortunate enough to chance on the Royale Guest house for our stay with its exceptionally reasonable prices. The proprieter Mr Joe Redhead proved a wonderful and engaging host, always ready to share with us his wealth of local knowledge which considerably enhanced our ability to enjoy our daily touring and evening entertainment. Our room was comfortably furnished and spacious with a double bed so luxurious that it was difficult to drag yourself out of it in the morning ! But dragging yourself out in time for breakfast was a pleasurable necessity as Mr Redhead's cooked breakfasts were not an occaision to be missed ! We were sorry to leave the Royale and still have much to see in the area. I would recommend this establishment for those who want comfort on a budget, an informative and cheerful host and a breakfast which will set you up for the day !
