In brief ... My partner and myself booked into the Rambler Country House Hotel on 28 December 2007 at a cost of £76 B&B per couple, per night. The break was meant as a well earned rest after the pressures of a hectic family christmas. Although the Rambler Country House Hotel is in an ideal location for walking or just taking in the scenery, sadly the service at this particular establishment was very poor compared to the many hotels and guest houses we have stayed in over the past few years. We were given no welcome greeting on arrival and were very curtly questioned by the Proprietor as to why we had parked in the hotel car park at 10.00 am. I informed the proprietor that I had already been given permission to park there during the booking process over the telephone. She told me, very abruptly, that I should have knocked on the door and told her that we had parked there. When we checked in at 4.30 pm that day, we were soaking wet and cold. However, the Proprietor still did not give us a greeting and insisted that we paid for our room there and then, even though she had already got my credit card details from when I made the booking. She stated that it was company policy that customers pay before they can go to their rooms. We proceeded to locate our credit cards, despite me asking if she would mind me popping down in five minutes when we had been able to dry off. She refused to allow us to do this. During the course of the night we were awoken on numerous occasions by the fire alarm going off. We dressed to go downstairs and again, were very patronisingly told to go back to our rooms with no explanation as to what the problem was. Although we did receive a telephone call during the night to say that the alarm had now been fixed there was still no explanation or apology when we went for breakfast. I could give other examples of the poor service we received but overall the attitude of the proprietor was very patronising and her customer service skills were very poor indeed. Although Edale is a very beautiful place to visit, what should have been a relaxing break was ruined by the poor attitude of the proprietor. I can now understand why there were very few customers in the hotel. I am not in the habit of complaining about accommodation, in fact, this is the first time. However, I do not want anybody elses break to be spoiled like ours was.
