Although Imogen is the perfect host,Rowan is the most arrogant Sous-chef (sorry Chef) I have ever met, the cooking is that of an average high street restaurant... value for money then try the Castle in St Peters Square ...

My wife and I decided to try the "Restaurant On The Hill" because of feedback from some past customer. When we arrived the hostess (Imogen) was very pleasing and more then happy to accommodate our wishes (A very good start to our evening) then it all went down hill. (no pun intented) Our meal quality was only average (for a commis chef) the potions were very small. On complaining about our meal we met the chef, (Rowen) he was very rude and arrogant and instead of trying to please us he made us both feel like we were in the wrong to complain. If it wasn't for the hard work of Imogon to put wright the wrongs of Rowen then the restaurant would of closed long ago..

Ruthin is lucky to have such a nice resturant in the town, the service is brilliant! Imogen was such a great help when i cancelled my booking, then changed the date and then changed the number of people coming! We had a lovely table upstairs and were allowed to decorate the area as it was a suprise birthday meal for a friend. We all really enjoyed our meals, the presentation and the quality of the meat was excellent. Everything is reasonably priced too. One fault is that you have book well in advance as they're sooooo busy!!!! I'll definitely be going back in the New Year!

I booked 'On the Hill' for my mother's birthday. They got the date of the booking wrong and so when we arrived we were told no table was available. The staff made no effort to accommodate us and made no real apology for the mistake. We left and went to the Three Pigeons in Graigfechan were we had a warm welcome, excellent food and my mother received a free glass of wine from the owner on hearing it was her birthday.

Have dined here on several occasions with friends and family and always look forward to it. Lovely ambience, great menu, fresh well cooked dishes, welcoming and efficient service, clean loos!. Whether a mid week treat or special occasion its always right at the top of my list. Recently took a group of 26 foreign dignitaries and I have to say OTH worked incredibly hard to ensure all the meals were of the same high standard we'd previously experienced, all dishes came out at the same time on each course and our guests really enjoyed the experience...quite an achievement for a small restaurant.

I can't praise this place enough! I had booked a table for four and although I was told that they only did a set menu for a large group they allowed us to do this. We opted for a three course meal at £18.50 and what a bargain!! Food was delicious, service excellent and particularly good value for money. I would recommend everyone to visit here - I've not stopped telling everyone about it since I went there! I will definitely become a regular!!!

We spent the weekend in Ruthin and ate at "On the Hill" after having it recommended to us.We chose to ignore the previous un-necessarily harsh review and opted to judge the place by what we ate the welcome we received... we were pleased we did! The Food, service and ambience were all excellent. I had the scallops and prawns starter and a main of rack of lamb (both daily specials) followed by home made chocolate torte- all were fantastic. My wife had home made soup, fillet of bream and the cheese selection, once again all were superb. With pre-meal drinks, wine and coffees we spent a little over £70 which we though was really good value for money. On the hill is excellent and deserves to do as well it was doing on saturday (all tables were full). We look forward to eating there again when we are back in Ruthin next June.

Booked this restaurant from home before going on holiday and was not at all disapointed with my choice. The customer service was excellent, I rang to check if they had German wine as it is all I drink, they did not but offered to get me a bottle for the Saturday evening. The choice was excellent as was the quality of the food. The whole experience was very enjoyable and excellent value for money. If ever we are in the area again we will definately be booking in.

Having recently submitted a review i feel very disappointed that it has not yet been published!!...but it looks as if all the recently submitted positive ones have!!..is it therefore your policy to publish only good reviews of on the hill rather than bring about a balance?? Had we had a good experience then i would be the first person to tell everyone about it..i very much appreciate both good food & service, however we are not the only people to be unhappy with On The Hill, and fully support the party of local girls who were recently left with no option but to go to their local paper...good on them!!!! Following a very disappointing meal at On The Hill last year,we decided to give it the benefit of the doubt, and booked a table for two last weekend...we really wish we hadn't bothered!!My vegetarian option of "Glamorgan Cheese & Leek Sausages with Bloody Mary Sauce"was quite honestly the worst veggie meal that i've ever been presented with..try to imagine two lumps of batter containing a large clump of sickly stringy cheese accompanied by what tasted like luke warm ketcup...it was an insult!!My husbands whole fish had been so badly cooked and handled that it was almost impossible to eat...so needless to say we didn't pay for it either!!The entire evening was spoilt..it was a joke..and not one that we will ever be repeating!!

The venue is very realaxed with the air of a french bistro. The food is usually of a high standard, although there has been the odd slip.If the kitchen is firing on all cylinders the standard is, without doubt, the best in the Vale. The "Tasting Menue" the Ruthin Diners Club enjoyed 4 weeks ago was exceptional and we all agreed as good as, if not better, than the Tydd-yn-Llan at half the price. House wine is very fair price and of a good standard.

On the Hill has improved enormously since it first opened and in response to encouraging feedback from customers - portions are larger, the food has always been excellent as too the service. It's good to have something decent locally. I am disgusted that the newspaper was so desperately in need of news to promote the wingeing and whining of the group that should have visited a 'greasy spoon' for their little snacks - there are a lot of us out there disgusted by this groups response - this is a fine restaurant, under huge demand by people who appreciate it for its fine food and wine (not whine)! If you were disappointed when it first opened, please revisit as you will be pleasantly surprised. For the whining group - there are plenty of snack bars in the area - or you may wish to consider a packed lunch?

Recently here on holiday and visited Ruthin as part of the intinery. Beautiful little town and "On the Hill" has to be one of the best restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure to eat in. The staff were very attentive and the food was just outstanding. I had the chicken liver pate (absolutely the best I have ever tasted), followed by "best and breast" lamb and that was superb as well. Vegetables are all top class as well and cooked to perfection. A wonderful evening finished with some delicious homemade sticky toffee pudding and all for a very reasonable price. Imogen and Rowan? ( I think) the chef were lovely people and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxing with nice background music and all in a building that has such ambience. Beleive me I have dined all over the world and this little gem takes some beating. If you dont try it you are missing a real experience. Well done

sadly, after 10 friends and myself ordering £168 of food, this was not enough. some of us ordered starters, mains and puddings or just 2 dishes. rowan cancelled our booking 48 hrs before we were due to eat there! because we were 'treating it like a cafe'. sadly for him, we were mostly locals and went to the paper!diabolical way to run a business!

Returning to On The Hill "under New Management" for the first time in August was a lovely experience. Greeted by the delghtful Imogen and presented with a menu that was full of choice. Everything sounded delicious - it was difficult to make up our minds! Having returned several times for both lunch & dinner, the food maintains its high standard of excelence - full marks to Rowan. Garlic mushrooms so deliously mouth watering & lunch time favourites include a warm salad of goats cheese and bacon. Good choice of Specials to include fish dishes and vegetarioan options. Keep up the good work Imogen & Rowan.

Just had to try "On The Hill" again now that the new owners have had time to settle in.When I came to write my review I just could not believe the comments of "Sally" 29th July. Bearing in mind for"Immy and Rowan" (the new owners) it was thier first evening running On The Hill.I still can't believe it was any where near as bad as Sally made out. If she was so dissapointed then why on earth didn't she commplain there and then. When Nick & Veronica were runing On The Hill it was very good, now Immy & Rowan are running it,it is excelent. It is still the same excelent food with slightly more choice on the speciasls board. Immy, who is a really bubbly charecter, is now front of house and Rowan is the chief who has gained his experience from working all around the world. A definate combination for success. I very much look forward to my next visit.Sorry to say Sally you are totally WRONG

Having always been regular diners at On The Hill when it was owned by Nick and Veronica,we had hoped that the new owners would still offer the same high standard of food, but sadly they did not.Our first visit was extremely disappointing!!!!The portions were very small, the fish and meat dishes overcooked, and the vegetarian option tasteless and unimaginative.Needless to say we came away still hungry and our pockets £100 lighter!!

Judith & I are fortunate enough to now call ourselves regulars at "ON THE HILL" It took several months before we managed to get a regular spot on a Friday night. I eat out all over the world and put this restaurant in number 1 spot. My reasons for this are. You are always greated in a warm and friedly maner. The menu is always varied with plenty of fresh local fish and meat accommpanied by a very good selection of vegitables. The sweet menue again is exelent with something to cater for everyone and all home made. The wine list again gives plenty of choice but without getting bogged down. I can gaurentee you will not be dissapointed but remember you must book at least 2 weeks in advance to be sure you won't be dissapointed.

Visiting Ruthin for the weekend we had heard several people rave about this restaurant. We were lucky enough to get a cancellation for the Saturday evening. The food was simply outstanding. A well thought out menu, most produce locally sourced about which the propreitor was very knowledgable about. A good wine menu, nice simple surroundings and high quality food combined to make this restaurant one which I wish I lived a lot less that 100 miles away from!! Note of warning: Book well ahead of visit to ensure a table.

Marvellous food, absolutely gorgeous, fantstic service an superb wine! Only remotely negative comment is that it was quite noisy at the beginning of the night due to a couple of large groups, however I would definately recommend On the hill to couples wanting a romantic night. If felt like we had left Ruthin for the night!
