After completing a hike to the summit of Lochnagar. My partner and I went looking for somewhere in Ballater to get some much needed Sustenance. After a short walk round the centre of the town we decided on the Rowan Tree. The restaurant had little atmosphere when we walked in however we thought that we would persevere. What a mistake. We were not offered a drink on arrival and after a short wait we were asked if we were ready to order. When the drinks came they were flat. My partners ordered the tart as a starter that was meant to come with caramelised red onion which looked anything but red onion. My starter was ok. We did mention this to the waitress and we were told that it looked odd because it wasn’t cooked properly... (Why was it served then?) We decided to see what was in store for the main courses due to our hunger and we found orange lumps in my partners mashed potatoes. Disgusting. We were never asked during this time how our meals were and when we complained at the end we were met with nothing but rudeness. We are not the type of people to usually complain unless we are extremely unhappy and on this occasion we considered this one of those occasions. Unquestionably the worst dinning experience I have ever had. Poor quality food and rubbish service. Should be avoided!

I ate here with my grown up family while on hoiday in Ballater. We had just completed a 16 mile hike up from the Lin of Dee so we were starving. The speed of service meant we didn't have to wait long for our excellent meals. I had the Highland Cathedral (rack of lamb) which was cooked to perfection. This is my favourite restaurant dish and I can honestly sy it was the best I've ever had. Although we were not overfaced by the portion sizes and despite being ravenous none of us felt able to order one of the delicious sounding puddings. The restaurant offers a reasonably priced wine list. We would all recommend it if you are staying in or around Ballater.

This was the second visit of the week. Menu - excellent Food - excellent Presentation - excellent Service - excellent Ambience - excellent Staff - excellent I cannot praise this restaurant enough, I/we could find nothing to criticise. Only problem I had was to choose what to order!! Well worthy of its 4star tourism rating. Hint to the restaurant: team up with a local B&B to provide "fine dining" packages.
