Three friends and I stopped at the Mermaid for breakfast this morning.We ordered 2 poached eggs on toast and 2 danish. The toast had green mould on it and the custard danish was not cooked. The pastry was raw.To make matters worse as we were waiting for our replacement toast the waitress came and asked us to pay.! The drinks were overpriced £2.40 for a glass of orange juice and 3.20 for a small pot of tea.
There were no apologies . We shall not be returning.

Took a relative for a meal at The Mermaid Inn, he was visiting from USA. We ordered a glass of wine each, I had white and he had red, when he sipped his wine he said that it tasted flat and stale as it the bottle had been opened for some time. I told him to take it back to the barman who had served us which is what he did. What happened next was disgraceful and disgusting, your barman took the glass and drank from it and then pushed the glass across the bar and said"nothing wrong with that". His attitude was agressive and non-caring. The barman expected my relative to drink out of the glass that he haad drunk out of. Because my relative didn't want to create a scene he did take the glass and wiped it clean. I was furious, I had chosen The Mermaid because I have visited it often and expected good service. Not only that your barmans actions contravene Health and Safely standards. Needless to say I will not be using your Inn again. I am so disgusted with the treatment we received

Very disappointing visit. Although we had rung ahead to book and check they were dog friendly the seats they had for us were in the no dog area, which probably set us up on the wrong foot with the staff, but things got worse rather than better. We were seated at a table by the two french windows, which might be nice in high summer, but with no heating on it was anything but a warm welcome. The bench seat was also infront of a huge TV which meant that there was no sitting comfortably without headbutting the screen. They did try to move us into the main area, but someone else got to the table before us,so we were just moved to a more central table, which was a little warmer, but we still sat in our coats for our meal. The toilets are very clean - you can tell by the smell of bleach, and the paper towels in plastic took me right back to my school days. The food took forever to come, and appeared as homemade as any factory could manage. My Steak and ale pie was obviously aimed at the nursing home market and the two slices of garlic bread were laughable in both their size and freshness - they would have been more at home on the bird table. There was ample staff although they seemed to do a lot of chatting to each other and needed chasing to bring our bread, which we needed as it was obvious we weren't going to fill up on the main meal. We cut our losses and went to the nearby garden centre where we had fabulous coffee and cakes in a huge barn of a building that they had managed to heat to a reasonable temperature, dispite the cold outside.
It seems that they have a couple of nice tables by the fire, but without heating or any kind of atmosphere the majority of this venue is best avoided til the spring returns.

I would just like to reply to Kitty Lewin's remarks, I was actually eating at The Mermaid at the time she came in and can clearly remember her children, what spoilt noisy little brats they were and their mother was no better! she clearly thought she was superior to everyone else and her children could do no harm, they were running wild all over the place my, husband and I were so glad no relieved when they all went, we were in full view of the bar and can recall Ms Lewin was rude demanding her bill, pushing in when the barmaid was serving,it was busy she could see that, there was no animosity from the barmaid that we saw she only stuck up for herself to a very snobby rude arrogant woman that we had the misfortune to be in the company of, well done to the barmaid. We can honestly say the meal we had was superb and the service was excellent and have been back since well worth the visit

ns. I have visited with my children several times and they are well looked after with colouring and their own menu which includes pudding. The beers are excellent. During winter there are two open fires and a cosy upstairs restaurant. and in Summer there is the bright airy conservatory. I cannot fault the Mermaid in Burford and will continue to visit on a regular basis

I have just returned from a miserable meal at the Mermaid Inn. I was with 3 very well-behaved children for an early supper. The food was so cold it had congealed; the fish was greasy and full of bones. The toilets were smelly. But worst of all was the owner / manager, who ignored me as I waited patiently to pay my bill, whilst she chatted with all the blokes in the pub. When I asked to pay the bill that I had already waited a long time for her to produce (which she had slapped on the table, then walked off, not letting me pay) she screamed at me that there were other people to serve. Throughout the time I waited at the bar I had had to leave my children alone for 10 minutes at the table. I said that I had to get back to them, at which point she screamed that it wasn't her problem I had children. A horrible, horrible rude lady. I basically paid a lot of money to be abused and have nasty food.

We (a group of 8 adults and 2 children) visited the Mermaid Inn for my fathers birthday and while the setting was lovely, the staff seemed unwilling to help advising 'only one chef is working today' therefore the menu was cut in half, the manager 'only had one pair of hands' when asked for a jug of water and then followed it up by upsetting my four year nephew who was playing quitely in a corner of the restaurant by telling him he wasn't allowed to, as other customers were soon to sit down, there was no one on there way. I must say however that the food was fantastic and our waitress was very helpful by trying to undo the managers faults.

This is an excellent restaurant in the heart of Burford. The food is tasty and well prepared--the mussells are out of this worle. The setting is warm and comfortable, and the service is without peer. The hospitality and friendliness of the owners, Rachel and Allen, make a visit here well worth the while in itself. If you are in or near Burford, go to the Mermaid. You won't regret it.
