Three generations of our family decided to visit Renishaw's 1940s weekend in costume to celebrate my mother's 79th birthday. Undaunted by the high winds, we all donned our gladrags (I'm a costume designer, so it helped!)packed a very substantial, non-40s picnic and arrived at the house at about midday. Glad that we'd packed several spare hatpins, we made our way around the grounds, attracting lots of interest and requests for photos. The chaps selling beer in the courtyard gave mum a free celebratory beer. Having picked a relatively sheltered spot close to a vintage car to have our celebration meal, we unpacked the spread. And thats where the trouble started!! We were regularly visited by onlookers, snapping away and commenting on what was going on! One man came close and asked "Are you the 1940's family, then?" Eventually, the penny dropped. They thought we were "a turn"!! After several comments about the lavish fare, the plastic glasses and boxed Pinot Grigio,we had to come clean and tell some very embarrassed visitors that we were just having a day out, just like them! And that Spam and jam just couldn't compete with fritata, houmous, anchovies, roasted peppers, chorizo, ciabbatta, strawberries and cream and birthday cake! Mum had a fantastic day, saying its the best birthday celebration she's had (and this is the woman who, on her 70th, danced in the Bay of Naples whilst fireworks exploded over the sea)She told one of my sons, who was too inhibited to come with us, that it was like being a celebrity for the day! As she's 80 next year, its going to be hard to top!

Good Points: It was a basement suite and was nice & cool--unseasonably HOT temperatures during our visit. Bad Points: Nothing General Review: If you have anything other than that basement suite and the outdoor temp is around 30 degrees Celsius, you will need a fan in the room!

The best value I found in the UK. The rooms were neat and clean, the staff friendly and kind, the chef a gem. The food was great and the location was wonderful for both walks in the city and a quick access to the Manchester Airport (45 minutes). I plan to return and will visit again. Thank you.
