I have all ready submitted my review, but thought i should reply to a Chris Smith's reveiw on bad food at the Manor hall, his review of 2yrs ago is very much off the mark now. We had afternoon lunch followd on the night at a wedding reception a buffet which was fantastic and breakfast in the morning which was great. We were offered a Sunday lunch free off Angela, and was a fabulous meal as we eat out a lot and beat 90% of the others. So take no notice of Mr Smith comments and go there for a meal, you won't be disappointed.

Good Points: Friendly staff, good food, comfortable hotel. Bad Points: Room had character but was up in the attic with limited circulation space and difficult to move around because of low /sloping ceilings and beams.would have been better suited to a smaller person rather than a 6ft man. Also TV had very poor reception. General review: Good,

I have visited this hotel several times and would like to take this opportunity to give a special thank you to all the staff for our previous visit on 14.10.06. It was my dad's 70th birhtday and all the family stayed at the hotel. We had a brilliant time, food excellant, rooms have been up-dated, could not fault anything. We were given a large private function room as there was 18 of us. I carn't thank Michael & Sarah and Angela enough for making my dad day's a very special day and a one we will all remeber, thanks again.

Good Points: Loved the massive room, four poster bed, huge clean bathroom. Also liked the oldy worldy feel to the hotel with the wooden panels, portraits and suit of armour on the stairs. Also liked the laid back attitude in the late night bar and the breakfast was pretty good too. Bad Points: Couldn't get more than a dribble out of the shower. General Review: I booked a standard double room over the internet for a very reasonable rate of £70. We had a big bedroom with a very comfortable four poster bed and a flat screen TV. Bathroom was large and clean but unfortunately not much power in the shower. Loved the old fashioned feel to the hotel. Also staff were accommodating when we requested an early check in and even managed to have our room serviced before our arrival at 11.15 am (despite that no assurances could be given). We just stayed one night as we were in the area for a wedding, but I wished I had been staying longer to enjoy the rest of the hotel's facilities and the restaurant. I would happily recommend this hotel to others and if I get the chance I will be making a return visit in the future. In terms of value for money I would give this hotel 10 out of 10.

I previously stayed at the Manor in 1998 and was very pleased; however not so this visit. The room was far from clean, the shower didn't work, the exhaust fan in the bathroom over which you had no control was noisy to the point my wife had to leave the room at 6:00AM. The vents on the fan were covered in a thick grey congealed mass of gunk, that probably accounts for the noise if the inside is as dirty as the outside. The bar furniture was filthy, in serious dilapdated condition. I will never stay there again Peter

I had previously stayed at the Manor in 1998 and was quite impressed. This visit with friends from Canada was such an embarassment. The room was dirty, the exhaust fan above the bath/shower made noises enough to drive my wife out of the room at 6:00am. The shower didn't work. In the bar the service was not the best, the furniture was in a severe state of dilapitation and on top of that it was filthy. As a local of West Auckland and living in Canada I will never stay in the Manor House Hotel.

Good Points: A pleasant hotel, steeped in history, very quaint and old - suitable for anyone who wants to use the hotel as a base to visit the surrounding area. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you wanted to - as it were - stay in the hotel for extended periods of time. Bad Points: The hotel is a truly 3 star hotel, as we did find the room and facilities very basic. General Review: As a young couple having taken the week off work to visit family / Durham City, we needed somewhere to stay which was local to Durham City but affordable - the Manor House Hotel seemed to fit our requirements perfectly. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised as the hotel is positioned in a small but friendly town Â- West Bishop Auckland. We were politely received by the receptionist and we were booked in and on our way to our room in a matter of minutes. The hotel has a certain charm about it Â- very old and rustic looking. First impressions of the room were not great! We were in room 24 which was positioned away from the main hotel building in what we believed to be the old stables. The room had the essential amenities but looked quite dark and grim. There were several dimmed lights but this didnÂ't help the situation. The hot water tap wasnÂ't working, and the cold run hot? However, having reported this as a fault, this was fixed in a matter of hours. The room itself could have been cleaner, as the majority of the surfaces were clean, but there was a lack of cleanliness in the detail work Â- skirting boards etc. On a more positive note, the linen on the beds was very clean indeed. There were several posters around the building telling residents that the hotel was undergoing a refurbishment and so I am in no doubt room 24 would have been on the list. The highlight for us was the food! Although we only sampled the breakfast, there was an array of hot/cold choices, and the Jupiter Restaurant had very pleasant surroundings. The weather wasnÂ't great when we visited (it rained the whole time!), but there were some beautiful gardens where you could stay out and relax Â- it was such a shame we were not able to do this. In summary, not the best hotel we have stayed in, but by means not the worst! On the whole the hotel did the job for us that we wanted to do. Would I go back? Yes Â- more so after the refurbishment as I am sure the few problems we did encounter would be resolved.

Good Points: Character with comfort Bad Points: A more recent copy of the restaurant menu in the room or on display in reception. General Review: Peaceful, well located, full of character and nice features. Staff were friendly and chatty.
