Being a resident of Broughty Ferry I have had eaten in the Ship on numerous occasions and have always been happy with the food however, on our last visit no one in the party enjoyed their choice of the menu. Two of the party had Hallibut which had a very strong fish smell and the flesh was not white which is a sign of the fish not being fresh!I am a lover of Hallibut but have never had it taste or look like that. The other party member had never eaten Hallibut before and does not think she would have it again which is a pity as it is a lovely fish. The whole meal was a disapiontment I do not see us going back in a hurry which is a pity as the venu is lovely. Maybe the Ship needs to look at their menu and give it a revamp.

I was very disappointed with the food I had today at lunch-time at the Ship Inn. I have visited the Ship Inn several times before over the years but not in the last 2 years or so. My memories were of a cosy, welcoming pub, good for a nice drink, great views and adequate food. We ate upstairs in the restaurant and had starters of Salmon Parcel and Duck Confit which were perfectly edible but when the main courses came we were all equally surprised by how awful they were. The menu was varied and we were impressed with the variety listed but our only conclusion after trying to eat our dishes was that the Chef needs some cooking lessons! My Fillet of Hake was chewy, over-cooked and very unappetising. My mother had pan-fried Salmon which was so dry it stuck in the back of the throat, and my partner had Thai Fishcakes which were chewy with an odd texture and taste. The attempt to make up for the poor cooking with an over-sized portion of chips and vegetables failed miserably. When we were paying the waitress enquired if we had enjoyed our food and we explained how disappointed we had been. She then went back to the Chef and returned to apologise but defended the cooking and said it had all been freshly cooked - a little hard to believe or swallow, as the food had been! We were hoping for a tasty meal before travelling back down south but sadly won't be rushing back except to enjoy a drink and the view. Perhaps the Chef should try doing a shorter menu with foods she is comfortable cooking or seriously consider a course in how to cook fish! It's a real shame that the food is such a let-down as the owners have obviously put a lot of effort in the decor and I'm sure if the cuisine standard could be raised - business would be booming.
