Barton Grange has a great feel to it, something that comes from a mix of factors. In type it falls comfortingly between the rather stuffy country house hotel and the ruthlessly efficient but soulless city centre business hotel. Happily Barton Grange has retained its soul, managing to mix the original architecture and ambience of a country home for a wealthy gentleman (wood panelling prominent in some areas) with modern additions and decor, including the pool and sauna that visitors today expect. Staff members are friendly and efficient – that this is still a family run place shows in the service. And the food and drink don’t let the hotel down either, with one of the most cheerful hotel bars you could hope to find – a million miles from the airless and dingy places so many London hotels think are cool. The location is excellent too, easy to find just up the A6 from the M55 and five minutes off the M6, but right in the country, with the village of Broughton within easy walking distance.
