This is not a pretend 19th castle but a genuine 15thc quadrangular fortress adapted for use as a hotel. If you ignore the heritage market Vermeers, Titians and Rembrandts which adorn the walls, you will enjoy the unique experience of staying within a real castle which has preserved a great deal of its medieval fabric.
There is nothing phoney about the four barrel-vaulted towers with their eight foot thick walls. The Gatehouse is real too, complete with Latrine Tower, Porter's Lodge and Bottle Dungeon. The Castle is a delight to explore with its spiral staircases, narrow passages and genuine 17thc wall panelling. My room, directly over the gatehouse,retained its original fireplace, pedimented surround and spotless rococco mirror.
Once the sun goes down, the lights are lit, the piper plays the gateway shut. the mists rise and the resident ghost, Lady Lily, roams abroad. During my stay poltergeist activity had been reported in the Vanbrugh Library (Black Knight Restaurant). Incidentally the navarin of venison is to die for !

Good Points: Excellent friendly staff, good easy to find location, rooms clean, breakfast good.
Bad Points: Limited facilities, no gym pool etc
General review: Good, would stay here again if in the area

i was very pleased with the standards of lumley castle and wish to return to enjoy those privilages once again thankyou x
