Oh dear. I don't think I have ever written to complain about a place before in my life, but this place really was AWFUL. I went there with a party of 12 adults and 2 children, for my 30th, following a great day at Go Ape. It was Sunday, so it was the carvery. The choice of meat was 2 - turkey or beef, and there was just a small piece of the beef left. The man serving it up then went and got a fresh joint of beef, which had not been cooked enough - now, I do like beef to have a bit of pink in the middle, but this was decidedly bloody... nearly everyone left their beef. The vegetables had been left to soak in hot water, not drained, you just had to try to fish them out with a spoon (which had no drain holes so you ended up dumping tepid water as well as soggy veg onto your still-twitching beef)and, for some bizarre reason, all the veg tasted decidedly like fish...gross. Most people left their veg too. The desserts weren't too bad, nothing special, but the plates came out covered in water spots and discolourations from the dishwasher I presume. The place was deserted, which was kind of our warning clue when we arrived I guess. The lady who ran the place was very nice, she made sure the kids had crayons and stuff to draw on, so that was lovely, but she never asked us how the meal was (maybe she knew it was awful??) and they made a bit of a packet out of us all that day. It was awful, awful, awful fare and almost ruined my special day except that we'd had a fab time at Go Ape. My advice? If you want a decent carvery, go somewhere else!!

I joined friends at 9.45 am on Wednesday for a walk on Cannock Chase: a lady who I have since learnt was joint owner came out tol greet us, offered us the use of the pub's facilities and explained she was just about to start dooking the steak & kidney pies which wer on the day's menu. By the time we returned all but two portions of the said pie had gone but my companions who had them said they were excellent. My wife and I shared a lunch: she had the starter of trout on a watercress salad whic looked good - and she says it was - and I had liver & onions with peas and boiled potatoes. Not gourmet fare, but good plain food well cooked and presented. What is more, the staff were attentive and loined in our banter. I would certainly be happy to eat at this pub again - and my companions also recall that they had eaten at this pub on previous occasions and had all enjoyed their meals.

On Thursday 21th February 2008 I had the misfortune of visiting The Horns Pub, Rugeley. Our party of nine arrived at 7:00 to 7:15pm for a 30th birthday party, things looked grim to start with, the man who was the only person waiting (he may have been the manager)all evening came and told us that many of the menu items were not available or was limited in numbers – this included fillet steak only two available. My mother-in-law ordered white bait which was cold, tasteless and very tough. Two of us had breast of chicken again not very warn, very tough and stringy. Others had rump steak this was the same as the other dishes. Chips, if you can call them chips again were cold, they were limp and very fatty, other vegetables were also cold. The amount of food left on the plates said it all. Other than our party there was only two tables of four in use the rest were empty, I think this also says it all. The room was very cold, the service was slow and the food was very, very second rate : will we visit again not even if we were paid to go.
