The Lion's Mother's Day Flop Mother's Day, 22nd March 2009, I made the awful mistake of suggesting to my elderly parents that we meet at "The Lion" for a Mother's Day meal, it is rare that I am able to get time off work, since I work hard, 7 days pw. My parents used to eat at The Lion with some friends of theirs, so they were happy to agree to what was supposed to be a Mother's Day treat....sadly this was far from the case... First off they were not serving my parents preferred meal of Lamb Cutlets, instead it was Lamb Medalions with vegetables. Both my Mum & D ad and my daughter and I all decided to try that. The service meanwhile was poor, the fair haired young female waitress was miserable faced and ev everything seemed too much trouble for her. Then the said waitress brought cutlery, a steak knife and a fork for the main course of Lamb medalions, which immediately made us feel that the meat must be tough, otherwise why the steak knife? Then the meal came, served in a soup dish, perhaps so that it would look more than if they had put the same amount on a plate, one roast potato cut in half, a spoonful of carrots and brocolli and 2 bits of tough poorly cooked lamb, not medalions and my father's had a pigs kidney attached, how strange is that? I asked for mint sauce, the miserable waitress brought a tiny plastic pot saying that there was already mint in the gravy. The gravy was barely visible on the plate. My mother asked the miserable waitress if she could have more roast potatoes, the said waitress replied "I don't think so but I will ask", some time later she returned to our table and said "No the chef needs them for the roasts"! That was the last straw. Mother's day flopped. I had a hard job persuading my parents to have a sweet, but eventually we all ordered Rum and Raisen Ice Cream, it was tasteless and the service throughout was to say the least poor, with everything begrudged and too much trouble. The cost of this digraceful meal was £96. When asked at the till if "everything was alright" I replied "No, it was awful and its wrecked my mother's Day", to which the guy on the till replied "oh I'm sorry to hear that", after which he did nothing to appease me, no concession, no offer of a partial refund, no offer to fetch the manager for me to discuss my distdain with, so I left and for the first time in my life and at upon the suggestion of my parents; without leaving a tip. After my parents had gone home, I tried to phone The Lion asking to speak with the manager, but the guy on the till said that he was too busy to come to the phone, so I rang off saying "Ok if he is too busy "I will contact trading standards about this and speak to them instead". I am bitterly disappointed, niether my daughter, myself or my parents will ever go again and for £96 I feel I have been mugged and abused, I cannot therefore write a favourable review about this pub and I certainly cannot recommend it to others. The Lion was once a nice place to eat, but it has certainly gone down the nick since we went last time and the atmosphere was awful, the staff are miserable and the manager is a modern day scrooge. I am telling it the way it is here, I hope no one else has the same unfortunate experience. "Not recommended, avoid it like the plague, its a serious rip off and far from value for money" is my review.
