The mermaid is a large modern (1920’s) building which is a real family orientated community pub. The pub is situated on the Macmillan Way long distance walk – at the edge of the rural housing, but overlooks some beautiful countryside. Directly behind the pub is the Quarr Local Nature Reserve, and just down the hill is a well equipped children’s activity playground and skate park. During the long summer months, most customers will be sat outside in the huge quiet beer garden, overlooking the nature reserve. Many customers go to the pub to enjoy the fabulous sunsets over the Yeo valley towards the distant Somerset border to the county, or to live music events. In wetter weather, all activity revolves around the grand log fire, where even the most hardy long distance walker can recover. The welcoming landlords are happy to let walkers and the occasional camper van use the large car park, when the pub is not open. The pub serves Sharps Doombar real ale and Wells Bombardier on tap, with a good selection of other beers (San Miguel & Thatchers Cider) and spirits. All the pub food is handmade, and unpretentious, and meals are served from mid-day onwards (child portions available). Because the pub is a community pub, walkers with dogs and children, will also find themselves very welcome. I use the pub because they have free WIFI internet connection & HD sky/ESPN widescreen tele, so I can sit by the fire and relax after work.
