Took team of 15 colleagues for working lunch from local IT emporium Micro Focus. Had avoided for last two years as standards, food, and fair pricing began to slide in 2009/2010. This visit was a refreshing change and an eye opener. Great food menu with up fare, plus a burger selection of over 20 choices of varieties! Good service including gratuity requests from staff on standards. Good selection of beers and finally, competitive pricing for out of town drinking!

Came to this pub - had a fantastic homecooked meal - try the burger board its amazing - nothing like it in any pub in Newbury. Great atmosphere - nice pint at a great price. Friendly locals and staff. Will be coming here on a regular basis from now on. Pub very clean and tidy - and great for viewing sports on there many TV's. Decor changed for the better inside since my last visit many years ago. Definately will be coming up for the Poker Nights on Thursday evenings - and potentially will book to have my birthday here as they have a massive function room perfect for that occasion. Honestly - go and have a drink at The Starting Gate and maybe a bite to eat - trust me you will not be dissapointed. 10/10 :-)

when i rang for info i was told a xmas meal would not be a problem, it was 4 course and £19.95 ea. so far so good. on arriving we were informed that only lamb or pork available not turkey, should have booked earlier 4 that. only 2 choices of starter. we had the lamb, which was nice, the roast potatoes were burned 2 hard lumps you couldn't get a knife into, veg was microwaved, strange combo of cauliflower cheese with it also burned as were the parsnips! dessert of xmas pud was tiny flat individual portion with custard not cream, also microwaved. on the whole very unsatisfactory, with a lot of it being un-eaten. no 4th course. very apologetic & did take cost down 2 £30 but won't go there again.
