I had a good day at wisbech markett today. got loads of bargains, bought a new steering wheel cover for my car. Went to buy some meat from the big meat lorry, the meat was still good but the salesman is a pig. He talks to you like he's owed a favour and you will feel beneath him, they used to have a good bloke on there a while back. A chubby bloke who made you feel well looked after when you left, his patter was much better too. Veg was still good and I bought a new bracelet for her indoors from a curly haired guy inside.

A lingerie stall selling a great range of lingerie from everyday wear to that suitable for romantic evenings. Also a choice of childrenswear plus fashion/costume jewellery. Well worth a visit as prices are low and quality is high. Stall open every Saturday.

I was invited to visit the Sunday market whilst staying with Friends in Wisbech, for them it was a weekly pilgrimage, and the time spent queueing up in the car to get parked on the rougher than rough car park was I suppose all part of the fun, for me it was just trying to get this part out of the way as I have never been much of a market person myself. The market itself is housed in and around a couple of large warehouses, to one side there is a car boot which thins out and merges into the hustle and bustle of the rest of the established traders. There is certainly plenty of variation, everything from stalls selling lace curtains and washing machine parts to car parts and huge roll ends of carpets, goodness only knows how the buyers were intending on getting them home? Just like a fairground, the smell of frying onions and burgers permeates the air, along with the Irish folksy music emenating from every record stall. We chose a nice day to visit with the sun shining down drying up the puddles from the previous 5 days of rain. A natural path developed around the market where people picked there way past the damp spots. I noticed a large crowd gathered around a blue lorry whose side wall was open, exposing a mobile butchers shop, the proprietor was a very sharp operator, his "patter" flitting between sales talk and risque banter but it kept us amused for a good few minutes before we drifted on. My host had said previously that he would be looking for a welder for his garage, and after locating one on the car boot, spent a while haggling with the seller to drop his price, it seemed a little over the top to spend so much time bartering over an eventual 50p but this was obviously what made his visits to the market enjoyable. After we had milled around the entire site, I anticipated that we would be heading back to the car to head home, him lugging along the welder, but actually it was only to drop the machine off while we headed across the road to another car boot fair held in what was once a stock car stadium. If I thought I had seen "tat" in the first place, this was an entirely new level! I can honestly say that had I been the owner of most of the "items" on display, I would have been embarrased to try to sell them on. This was a car boot for end of the line car booters! We walked around the concrete oval track looking at the wares stationed on each side, I was wondering if we were going to be spending much more time here when I noticed a fireside compagnion set nestling on the ground at the end of a trestle, I had often said to my wife that something like that would look nice next to our fireplace, and after checking that I had a pound coin in my pocket passed it over to the vendor in return for the goods, much to the consternation of my host who berated me later for not trying to talk the price down!! Oh well, so it shows that even in the depths of dross, some diamonds are there to be found. We have a car boot sale held once a month locally which I have never yet been to, I might just go when it's on next time.
