I was readng the reviews of the Linden Tree Restaurant. I live in Seattle, WA, USA, and I am very surprised children are not being controlled in restaurants in England.
I lived in Barton Mills, Suffolk, in the 19790's and you did not see very young children going to lunch or dinner with parents. This was adult time. I don't mind the children if they are well behaved. America has a terrible problem with this. Young parents think it is cute if their child screams, runs around and cause chaos in the restaurant.
I went to a very fine seafood restaurant and this is what happening. The Mgr asked them to control the child and it did not work.
The Mgr gave me a dinner coupon to come back at another time where I could enjoy my meal. This is terrible. I hope England is not becoming another America. I want to see English food, English shops, English towns without American fast food. Is it still possible?

If "John" had checked his facts he would find that-one the rushbrook arms no longer has a ball pit and has not had for quite some time and two if you can't get your children to sit at the table I suggest you take them for a picnic at the abbey gardens ! The linden tree is one of the most child friendly place in bury providing colouring, cutlery, highchairs, menu and books to read and not restricted in space in any way !

I've visited the Linden Tree a few times and generally its a good place to eat in Bury. You get good value for money with the quality of food and the portions. The only downside is that this place is a family restaurant, in my opinion if you want to take your 4 year old kid out to dinner - dont go there. There's steps and the walkthroughs between the bar and conservatory area are narrow - accident waiting to happen. This should be a child free place. Go to the Rushbrooke Arms - they have a ball pit!

There are always two sides to every argument, but my personal experiences at the Linden Tree have always been so pleasant that my wife and I look forward to going back, the food is excellent and affordable, the staff always very pleasant and helpful, the owner is most pleasant and courteous, I am not surprised that the staff were concerned for a Childs welfare, its just a pity that shouting was needed to get the message across.

I was working at the linden tree pub as part of my work experience and thoroughly enjoyed it. All of the members of staff were very friendly and I wish I was working there for more than one week. They taught me how to waitress well, and I soon got the hang of it!
I must admit there were a couple of kids wondering then, but all the waitress did was just calmly said can the child stay with you. There wasn't any shouting involved at all.
Being at the linden tree in two different views was very interesting and would definately recommend people going there.

Firstly i would like to know why people who take children into a restaurant think they have the right to let them wonder all over the place and take no responsibility for them, lets face it if anything happened to their child whilst on the premises im sure they would be the first ones to complain, I have eaten in the Linden Tree on loads of occasions and have always found it to be an excellent establishment, i have 3 small children and am able to control them so that they sit at the table, maybe some people should not visit restaurants if their children are uncapable of sitting still, they should stick to Macdonalds!!, lets face it other customers dont want to put up with your kids running riot!
I would highly reccomend the Linden Tree as a top pub, if you want good quality food and plenty of it nowhere does it better.

Asked once to keep child at the table.
Asked again because the first request by the staff was obviously ignored as child got up again and moved away from the table.
Waiting staff moving freely to deliver hot food, plus hot cups of coffee, as well as trays of drinks in glasses.
An accident waiting to happen!
Yes, most responsible of you.
Not surprised in the slightest that the owner got upset.
If you take a child to an adult restaurant then BE RESPONSIBLE and keep your child at your allocated table, away from any dangers associated with hot food and drinks.
THEN you can claim to be a responsible parent.
Until then, Mcdonalds and Burger King cater for wandering children.
If you write a review in a public place in order to critisise the restaurant owner's reaction because of YOUR lack of responsibility by keeping your child seated , then do not be surprised if you get an alternative viewpoint.

I really do not think people should make comments on other people's reviews when they were not present at the time of the incident. Our children were not "running riot", they are well behaved children and we ARE responsible parents. I wrote the review because I do not appreciate the owner of the establishment shouting at customers which in my opinion is very unprofessional.

After having visited The Linden Tree over many an occasion I find the pub/restaurant to be an exceptional place to visit. Their menu is not only full of variety, but their portions give you most excellent value for money. The staff are courteous also. There are quite a few young staff, but their zest for wanting to serve is refreshing. Far too many places I have visited on my travels leave me feeling that I am rushed by the waiting staff, only wishing to gain "tips" and not caring whether I have enjoyed my meal or not but The Linden Tree is the complete opposite. To book a table on a Saturday night means plenty of notice because it is that popular but it is because they are without a doubt the best serving pub/restaurant in Bury St Edmunds and beyond!
I appreciate the fact that although children are catered for, they are not allowed to "run riot" in the public house. After all, as an adult I have dined there to enjoy the food and the service, not to watch children be allowed to wander around by their parents, who should be more responsible. When they serve coffee, the waiting staff have to carry the hot beverages to a table and I can only imagine the commotion it would cause if a child got in the way of a waitress whilst they were climbing the stairs to serve hot beverages to a table!. This also goes for the hot plates of delicious food that have to be carried to tables. Lets face it, they serve quality food. They are not a fast food outlet with happy meals.
I would without a doubt recommend that if anyone were visiting Bury St Edmunds or in the near vicinity, to go along and have a meal there. It is by far the best pub/restaurant to go to by miles. I live in Scotland and without a doubt I would always visit The Linden Tree when I am visiting that area and I heartily recommend others do the same. You will NOT be disapointed.

Myself, my friend and our two daughters went to the Linden Tree for a meal at lunchtime. We asked for seating in the restaurant because the bar area is smoking and we had children with us.
Our meal was satisfactory and the children had food from the Children's Menu. My friends child, who is nearly two, got up from her seat and went round the corner and was asked by a member of staff to go back and sit down with her mother, she also asked my friend to control her child. A little while later she got up from her seat again and went and sat on a step. She was not being naughty or running around. A different member of staff came up to my friend and very rudely told her to control her child. When my friend went to pay for her meal she asked the lady if she could refrain from talking to her so rudely, at which point the lady loudly shouted at her and carried on shouting at her in front of all the customers as my friend came back to her seat embarrassed.
We then asked another member of staff for the name of the lady who shouted and was told that she was the owner of the Linden Tree and so we could not even put in a complaint regarding her behaviour.
The Linden Tree has menu's for children so obviously children should be welcome in the establishment. They obviously think children should sit in their seats at all times and should be seen and not heard. As far as I am concerned, if you have children, give the Linden Tree a miss.
