Disbelief is the only to describe our lunch-time non-dinner experience. We entered the pub at 1.15 on bank holiday Monday – walked through the near empty pub to the busy garden, though no trouble in finding a table. Picked up readily available menus and look at predominately displayed Specials board. Go to order – after waiting for nearly 10 mines in queue at outdoor serving area (nobody serving then somebody who doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing) go inside to order. To amazement told they are not serving any food as “we have too many tables and can’t cope”. We leave and go to one of the many other excellent pubs in surrounding villages (in this case The Greyhound at Chilcot – excellent food, good service, nice quiet garden and a lot cheaper – so thanks Castle). I therefore suggest you avoid and either have light lunch in Chiddingstone Castle Café (through gate beside pub), The Greyhound, Little Brown Jug, etc, all of whom serve good quality food and don’t have meaningless menus.

This pub is a true English pub with excellent food either with a bar meal or in the restaurant. The food is so well prepared and delivered it is far better than any of these so called top restaurants around the country. The beer is expertly kept and the local Larkins is in my opinion still one of the best beers in the country, particularly the porter, role on winter. Now to the staff, when I go in to this pub I may be tired from the day, however when I come out I am always smiling, they are so pleasant and have a very dry sense of humour. Excellent.
