I read the review on this website before staying at the Old Ship, and was a bit dubious. Joanne was no doubt exagerating about the heat in the room, and Brighton is a part central... you expect a bit of noise from partying. We're a young couple from London and midnight partygoers making noise are nothing new to us, but I have to say; Joanne is spot on. They aren't on the street... they are in the room with you, shouting in your ear! There is no soundproofing whatsoever, and the a drunk three streets down mingled with the creaks and groans from other rooms in the hotel. It was NOISY! Then the heat... as you can see above, I stayed on the 1st of December which was a cold and windy day, and let me just say this... thank the stars for the fan in that room. My girlfriend, who enjoys scolding baths and triple thick douvets + waterbottle actually asked me to open a window! Just as well cause they weren't keeping the noise out! On the plus side I have to say breakfast was enjoyable and the staff helpful if not particularily competant (the guy at reception gave us the wrong room number, so holiday time wasted trying key on wrong door!). But problem solved quickly and without faffing about. Other than that, nice x-mas decor, and bar wasn't too expensive. Wouldn't recommend it, you can stay in much better places in Brighton, but if you get it free, may be worth a shot.

We were very excited about staying at the Old Ship Hotel but what a disappointment it was and really not one I would recommend. The hotel itself is in a good location opposite the sea and near to the town but the bedrooms are small and ridiculously hot, there is no air conditioning and the ceiling fan really isn't sufficient enough to cool the room down. Also for a hotel in it's location, it doesn't have any form of sound proofing on the windows and we were kept up til 4am with partygoers outside swearing and shouting and then woken again at 7am by dustcarts. Overall we managed approx 3 hours sleep which totally ruined our weekend. We thought we would treat ourselves to breakfast in bed but when it arrived the waiter demanded we pay the extra £4 there and then which we didn't have on us so was threatened to have the food taken away, when we finally got to eat, it was cold and revolting. We asked to speak to a manager next morning and told one wasn't available and had to write instead, which we did, to no avail, we were told conservation laws restrict sound proofing the windows!! (I'm sure a little imagination could of got round this.) Apparently they are aware of the heating problem but could do nothing to help us. There really are far better hotels in that price bracket, don't touch The Old Ship.
