I viscid this pub for a meal and I have to say it's the best meal I have ever had in a pub in Cornwall. It is all homemade, try it you won't be disappointed.

We visited Portreath for a long weekend and had been advised by friends who had visited last year to try the basset arms for our meals. We did this and found the meals to be fantastic and all home made. The spicy meatballs were lovely and the liver and bacon was really tender. The kids had a great time playing on the adventure playground whilst waiting for their meal. I can truly recommend this pub for food, entertainment (live band on a Saturday night, quiz on a Friday night) and friendly atmosphere. Thanks Basset Arms you'll be seeing us again later on this year.

My wife & I acompanied by the mother-in-law & her partner & our 10 year old daughter & our 5 year old daughter went to the Basset Arms Portreat this Sunday (7th December 2008). On arrival we was met with an extremly helpful staff who showed us to our seats & helped us with our coats, then gave us our menu's. We decided to go for Roast Beef for the Wife, Daughter (aged 10), Mother-in-law & her partner, I ordered the Turkey along with my 5 year old daughter. On arrival which took about 15 minutes (very good in my opionion as they were almost full to capacity), the food looked & smelled delicious & upon tasting found it to be exactly that, wonderful. We all made comments on the massive cuts of beef & the turkey also, & how the veg' was cooked to perfection. We were looked after extremly well & we all (including my daughters) would like to recomend the Basset as a very lovely atmospheric happy place with very helpful staff who catered for all our needs, & their care for our children was amazing, at the end of the meal the waitress was making the children laugh talking to them in a very pleasant way & upon leaving even went to the window to wave goodbye to the girls. I have read a prior review & can honestly say that they must have been in a bad mood that day when they wrote their review because I for one let alone the wife, daughters & mother-in-law & her partner all agree this is a MUST VISIT place set in a wonderful setting litteraly just across the road from the beach! My rating is ***** yes 5 stars!! Good work Basset Arms, we WILL see you again very soon. That's a promise. Mark & Maxine (from go-cabs).

My husband and I live locally, and decided to visit a local pub in the area for supper this evening. My husband suggested the Basset Arms as we have not been there for sometime. We did not want to eat late so I booked a table for 6.30pm. We arrived at 6.15 and were shown to our table immediately, we order a couple of drinks while looking through the menu. We then waited 30 minutes for someone to come back and take our order; we were just about to pay for our drinks and leave when the waitress appeared. I ordered fish cakes and my husband ordered lemon sole off the specials board. When my meal arrived I thought it looked a bit uninpiring on seeing a pile of french fries before focusing on the fishcakes which I must say were a good size. On tasting the them my first thought was how bland they were, then I found lumps of potato. If there is anything I do not like, it is lumpy mash potato. All I can say is that my first impression was correct, they were absolutely tastless. I managed one and a littler of the other one and that was it for me. More crab, less potato, more seasoning would have made good crab cakes. The result may have been smaller crabcakes, but more delicious. My husband's opinion of his meal was that the fish was fine but he thought it was probably frozen; the sauce was awful and should not have been served with lemon sole, was probably a marie rose sauce from a bottle with prawns, most unsuitable as a sauce to serve with a delicate fish like lemon sole. He enjoyed the vegetables except for the haricot vert that he believed had been microwaved with no water, so they were shrivelled. I am sorry to have to pass this on, but I am a cook and cooking is my passion; I am afraid the Basset Arms was definitely a big disappointment to us. We did not bother with a dessert as they all looked bought-in; we decided not to chance cheese and biscuits. The waitress came to remove our plates and asked if we had enjoyed our meal, to which replied I did not enjoy mine and told her why, her only reply was "oh OK", that was it, I was dumbfounded as I would have told the customer that I would pass it on to the chef. She then asked if we wanted anything else, we said we would like two coffees, we waited and waited for 25 minutes, in the end my husband had to get her attention and you could see she forgotten all about the coffee. When the coffee arrived it was very nice and we paid our bill and left. Sorry Basset Arms we gave you 2/10. Sheila Sears

Now with new owners, Eric & Sue, we had 4 georgous meals - Steak & Ale Pie was the best I have had in years. Atmosphere was sooooooo much better.
