We have lived in the area for 24 years and during this time have paid quite a number of visits to The Chequers, but always in the past, had super food and service. How things have changed! We went there to dine ten days ago and were seated in the conservatory. My starter was OK but my husband's 'Classic Moules Mariniere' was anything but classic and more like 'Moules a la creme' as it was more cream than anything else in the sauce [and my husband is on a low fat diet]. We commented about this to our waitress who checked with the kitchen and came back to say it was cooked correctly. [Not according to my husband's hotel school training and 30 plus years in the F&B industry.] We both ordered calves liver for our main course, cooked pink. When this was served, it was not pink, but too thickly cut, dark brown [obviously old], slimy and with the gristly sinews still left in it. We called our waitress and said we would pay for what we had eaten and drunk and asked to see the manager. After ten minutes he had not appeared - when we chased we were told he was busy with other customers. So we went to the till to pay. The manager still chose to ignore us, so my husband asked him if he was going to speak to us. His response was 'do I have to listen to your whinges?' We said that we found his attitude extremely rude and would leave a review of our experiences and complain to the owners, so he offered to give us the owners name. He handed my husband a folded piece of paper and when he got outside and opened it, this 'manager'had just writted on it 'd*** h***'. When we finished our dinner - at another local gastro pub, the owner told us that the shaven-headed guy we had been insulted by was actually the owner, not the manager, and that the pub was actually up for sale. What a way to try to sell the goodwill of a business!!!
