Good Points: High quality of facilities and general fabric. Bad Points: Disappointing meal one night in Bistro. Rest of the meals, good standard. General review: A very pleasant stay, good size of hotel- not too big.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at the Philipburn House Hotel. The bedroom was extremely comfortable, service and food were excellent and the staff were helpful and pleasant. We shall certainly make a return visit to the Philipburn.

This is a country hotel which needs a good maintenance guy and extra staff. I found that frequently I could wonder about the hotel and not meet any staff, this was frustrating when I required something. What seems to happen is that one person is on duty and does everything, reception, get coffee, serve at the bar, hoover/clean and serve meals...crazy! The outside seems to suffer from the staff shortage as well. The gardens are over grown and paths not swept, the pool area is particularly uncared for and run down and seems to be the main staff smoke area...ah that is were all the staff are! Take a walk from the car park through the pool entrance and be prepared for a shock. It was a walk through porch area in very bad condition with various obstacles to clamber over on your way and the smell of cigarette smoke as I discovered this was the staff smoke area entrance. Other staff smoking areas where behind the outdoor chess set lying in a mass of leaves and the back left hand side of the hotel. So take a walk and you are guaranteed to meet more staff outside than inside working. Very disappointed definitely not 4 star.
