Espadrille is one of those rare finds these days. An independent retailer selling unique, top quality lines that you just can't find anywhere else. Espadrille is tucked away at the end of the Victorian period Arcade off the Market Square in the centre of Hitchin. You have to go down to the end of the arcade and turn right just before the car park, there are signs. The little shop is painted in the warm colours of the South of France and it's shelves are stacked with all kinds of lines made from the traditional striped fabrics of the Basque region. They sell tablecloths, napkins, tea towel, aprons, cushions and a whole bunch of stuff besides. Of course they also sell espadrille shoes in both plain colours and the same striped designs, with a range of matching tote and shopping bags too boot. Trudi, the owner, provides the most attentive and kindly service and I look forward to returning for a chat when I am next in the area. They also have a website, easily found in Google, which has most, but not all, of what is available in the shop.
