I have stayed at the Saxon dozens of times . It's a quirky little place and you're going to love it or hate it. I've always stayed in the 'old house' which must be at least 100 years old. The new extension is more like a Holiday Inn Express. There's a dramatic difference between the two. If you can stay in the room immediately above the bar ( facing the main road )you can run around or dance to your heart's content, there's that much space. The staff tries so very hard to please, but they are despite their best efforts incompetent. A real live Fawlty Towers. The only saving grace was David the night porter. A rather old-fashioned chap who knows what service to the customer should be. A throw back to an age gone by. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him and his raison d'etre was simply to make the guests happy. If I ever won the Lotto I would hire him as my personal butler and pay him his weight in gold. I stopped using the Saxon after two trips coincided with David's nights off. There was no up side to the maids not showing up and having to make my own bed. Other than that I have very fond memories of the place. And I leave you with the Italian proverb : from Grandfather to Grandson...shirtsleaves to shirtsleaves. Please make a note of it Saxon.

Good Points: God value for money. Adequate facilities. Bad Points: TV wasn't up to date. Shower was difficult to operate. General Review: Convenient place to stay. Staff are friendly and service is fine. I think that for a budget hotel this hotel is suitable, but for somebody looking for a more luxurious experience they would be disappointed.

From the moment we walked into the hotel (a noun that should be used sparingly for this particular establishment!) we encountered problems. Firstly, the rate we had agreed was increased by £15 per night, this was put down to an oversight and we soon agreed to the original cost plus a supplement for breakfast (which had been agreed in the original price, but we just wanted to get the matter sorted). The room we were put in was a disaster, the decoration was from an era long gone and best forgotten, this however one could put up with if the room was clean, which it was most certainly not! The bathroom was relatively clean, bar the bath which was a prime candidate for the "before" shot of a Domestos commercial. Breakfast was a farce, after asking for a pot of coffee 5 times over a 40 minute period I actually got up, went to the kitchen and made it myself, which didn't see to bother the waitress at all! It took 45 minutes to get our full English breakfast, which had not actually ordered, but at that point we took it for fear of starvation or malnutrition! That said, it was very nice but not at all worth the £5 supplement we had paid for it when the 45 minute wait was factored in. There were 15 of us staying in the hotel and we all encountered the same problems with the rooms and the breakfast. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place at all costs! If you have to stay in this area look for a reservation in The Toby Carvery, some of our group stayed there and it was much more a hotel the shack we put up with.

This was a very relaxing hotel to stay in. We stayed for the weekend and thoughly enjoyed our time here. From the moment we arrived we were well looked after by the staff. Some parts of the hotel were dated but I would still recommend it to any one. Its only about half an hour away from Manchester City Centre but with the late bus service it saves you paying for taxis.

"Room was spacious and well furnished, finding a bath in the en-suite was a bonus.",T.V. reception wasn't the best.,"Staff were very helpful, polite and pleasant, food was of a good standard. Being close to the town centre, taxi fares were quite cheap.Ample parking and very handy for the motorway. Would definately stay at this hotel again when in the north west."

Warm clean and comfortable. Great Breakfast and great staff,I would like to say that your night manager was absolutely first class. I stayed with various family members the night before my fathers funeral and this man (whose name I did not get unfortunately) was so lovely and kind and helpful. He is certainly an asset to your hotel and I hope to see him again on a happier occasion. Give him my regards and many thanks.
