Good Points: Welcoming, courteous & professional staff. Great food. Bad Points: Ensuite bedroom very disappointing & not as described on website. Grubby grouting & peeling wallpaper in bathroom. Armchair in need of repair. Media equipment not working fully. General review: Our overnight stay was redeemed by lovely staff and excellent restaurant cuisine.

This nicely balanced hotel was reopened in 1999 by the former Speaker of the Scottish Parliament, Sir David Steel. Its setting on Venlaw hill means that rooms have fine views – especially so the higher ones. The atmosphere is pleasing and the service caring. We really did like our room and in a world of samey hotel rooms and overdone or bland bedrooms, we enjoyed the homeliness and peace of relaxing in comfort in the TV-facing suite, sipping a cuppa, while enjoying the outlook. The food is reliably good and our experience confirmed this. The hotel doesn’t oversell itself and is fairly priced. The area is highly appealing (the Scottish Border counties call themselves the leading short break destination) and if you want to enjoy a spa or a round of golf or a child-friendly day-out then the hotel will help you with ideas from its racks of information. At around 20 miles from Edinburgh, some would say that this is a wise choice – a country castle base a pretty drive from the capital – and I would agree. A perfect weekend escape from the city, too!
