We went for drinks on the stunning terrace and dinner in the evening. The setting is georgeous without a doubt, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the food. The menu was a set menu £26 for 2 courses, £31 for 3, but nearly half the menu came with surcharges. This means that it can actually be nearly £45 for 2 courses and over £50 for 3 - quite steep, I have eaten in mitchelin starred establishments for less. This would have been fine if the food was of that calibre, but the prawn pil pil starter (supplement £5.95 made at your table) consisted of 5 prawns and the onions and garlic were burnt. The other 2 starters which my companions had, the scallops (again £5.95 supplement) was passable, but not meriting the supplement on top. However the pate was very good. For mains we had the organic chicken with haggis which again was acceptable, a little dry though, and nothing special. However the rest of the mains were poor, lamb which was the smallest piece of overcooked lamb with watery mashed potatoes, the prawn pil pil (again surcharged) which for a main now consisted of 8 or 9 prawns with the same issues as for the starter. However we also ordered the steak diane (£9.95 supplement) which was bland. We decided not to stay for dessert... In summary I do not know what the bistro is like, the scenery is stunning, wine was good, but a big thumbs down to the restaurant. I would suggest they cut the supplements and concentrate on the basics of providing quality food which would be expected in a 4 star hotel.
