Foulness Island, Essex

Foulness Island
Foulness Island is the forth largest island off the coast of England, and is located near Southend-on-Sea in Essex. There are two villages on the island, Churchend and Courtsend. In 1953 the island suffered severe flooding, killing two people, and is protected by a sea wall. The island contains large areas of sand and mud flats that are home to an extensive variety of birdlife including Oystercatchers, Avocets and Brent Geese, who migrate from Russia. Foulness Point has be designated a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI).
