Brownsea Island, Dorset
Brownsea Island is the largest island in
Poole Harbour, in the county of Dorset, England and can be reached by ferry. The Island was the location of the first ever
Boy Scout camp , lead by
Lord Baden-Powel in 1907, and now belongs to the National Trust. The island, which is mainly a mixture of woodland and heath areas, is home to red squirrels and a variety of birdlife including kingfishers and peacocks.
Brownsea Island is an Area of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and houses a nature reserve run by the Dorset Wildlife Trust. Additionally, the island is home to the
Brownsea Open Air Theatre who stage annual performances of the works of
William Shakespeare .
