Alderley Edge is around five miles to the northwest of Macclesfield and 12 miles south of Manchester in the north west of England. A steep and thickly wooded red sandstone ridge, Alderley Edge overlooks the Cheshire Plain . One of the main features of the area is the Engine vein, a natural fault in the rock rich in copper and other minerals. The fault has been worked for minerals since at least the Bronze Age. The highest point of the Edge is the Beacon, once the site of the Bronze Age burial mound & later used for warning beacons. Owned by the National Trust , the site’s facilities include a car park, toilets, picnic area and the Wizard tea room.
