Served in Scots Guards during WWII. Became Conservative MP in 1955. Was Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, for Employment (1973-4) and Home Secretary for four years. Deputy to Margaret Thatcher, advisor on Falklands War and during general election campaigns. Made Viscount in 1983.
