Office boy at age of 16 at the Daily Sketch. Political correspondent at Yorkshire Post after WWII. Moved to ITN as newscaster in 1956. Became main political commentator for BBC in 1961. Appointed managing director of BBC radio in 1968, returned to television in 1976. Director General until retirement in 1982. Knighted in 1980.
