Won scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. Researched into nature of cathode rays. Deduced that electrons were 2,000 smaller than the lightest known atomic particle. Made discovery of the isotope. Helped found Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Made Cavendish Laboratory a world renowned research institution. Awarded Nobel Prize for physics in 1906, knighted in 1908.
