Born 1837. died 1921 - Scottish photographer, traveller and writer.

One of first great photojournalists. Travelled in Far East before settling in London. Accounts of his journey included Foochow and the River Min (1873). Best known for Illustrations of China and its People (1873-74) and Street Life in London (1878).
