Educated in Royal Caledonian Asylum orphanage. Dismissed from army for alcoholism. Contributed poems to the paper, National Reformer. Poems included his best-known The City of Dreadful Night (1874), Essays and Phantasies (1881) and Shelley, A Poem (1885). Depression and ill health led to use of narcotics.
