Studied for priesthood, turned to medicine but did not graduate. Became opium addict, rescued by Wilfrid and Alice Meynell. Wrote mainly religious poems including the well-known Hound of Heaven. Other works include Poems (1893), Sister Songs (1985) and New Poems (1897). Essay on Shelley (1909) appeared posthumously.
