Studied chemistry in evening classes and metallurgy at Royal School of Mines. Discovered process to remove phosphorus and sulphur from steel. Method known as Bessemer process in Great Britain but Thomas process on the Continent. Pacifist and a philanthropist. Died from a lung complaint, probably tuberculosis.
