Elected MP for Derby in 1910. Ardent trade unionist, helped organise railway strike of 1911 and led strike of 1919. Appointed Colonial Secretary in 1924 when Labour came to power, Lord Privy Seal in the 1929 Cabinet. Career ended when found guilty of divulging Budget secrets. Wrote My Story (1937).
