Born 1894 - Istanbul, Turkey. Died 1971 - Pioneer of social services and Women's Voluntary Service for Civil Defence founder.

In 1938 formed women’s organisation to help with air-raid precautions. During WWII it assisted with evacuation of women and children, with setting up canteens and services for the troops. Continued after the war, pioneered meals on wheels and home helps. Made life peer in 1958, one of first women to take her seat in House of Lords.
