Born 1828. Died 1914 - English chemist, inventor and industrialist.
Left school at 13. Invented high-speed bromide paper in 1857, patent bought by George Eastman, founder of Kodak. In 1879 successfully demonstrated a light bulb. Formed the Edison & Swan Electric Light Company. Discovered the process that was later adapted to make rayon. Improved lead-plate batteries. Elected FRS in 1874, knighted in 1904.
