Born 1803. Died 1859 - Scottish mechanical and structural engineer.
Returned from Colombia to manage his father’s locomotive engine-works in Newcastle upon Tyne. Famous for his Britannia Tubular Bridge (1850), bridges at Conway (1848), Montreal (1859) and Royal Border Bridge at Berwick (1850). Was MP from 1847 for many years. Buried in Westminster Abbey.
