Born 1874. Died 1955 - Scottish poet and anthropologist.
Studied dentistry before turning to writing. Became authority of the folklore and mythology of Central and South America. Pioneered use of archaic Scots language in poetry. One of founder members of Nationalist Party of Scotland.

I recently purchased a book of poetry, "Plumes of Time" by Lewis Spence
with a dedication on the flyleaf from the auther to popular novel writer Annie S.
Swan, a contemporary of Spence. I found the book in a charity shop in Gullane, where Miss Swan lived until her death. I was drawn to Spence's poems by one in particular called "Capernaum".
