Made conducting debut in 1938 at Budapest Opera. Force to leave for Switzerland due to anti-Semitism where he achieved success as conductor and pianist. Directed Munich Opera and Covent Garden. Conducted Chicago Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic. Took British nationality in 1972. Awarded KBE in 1971.
